In May, a 13-count indictment alleged Santos participated in a fraudulent political contribution scheme, fraudulently collected unemployment benefits and filed false financial disclosures with the House. A superseding indictment in October added 10 more charges, alleging he used donors' credit cards without authorization and falsified his campaign finance reports. Instead, as a group of lawmakers repeatedly cited the findings of the ethics report, Mr. Santos and his defenders argued that removing him before his criminal case is resolved could open the floodgates to a raft of frivolous expulsion efforts, overriding the will of voters. All that could come to an end on Friday, when the House is scheduled to vote on a resolution to expel Mr. Santos, 35, following the release of a damning and detailed report from the House Ethics Committee that found “substantial evidence” that he had violated federal law.
City officials say certain districts are reaching that cap, and this measure would raise it to 8,500 units per district. A 1950s provision of the state Constitution requires cities to first get the blessing of voters if they want to build publicly funded housing for poor people. Opponents of the tax, who include The Times’ editorial board and former county Supervisor Michael Antonovich, say the proposed tax and how the revenue would be spent are vague and not fully fleshed out, while also representing a decent-sized jump in people’s tax bills. In the litany of lies and half-truths told by George Santos in a fanciful journey in which he was first elected to and then expelled from Congress, the one he told about his nascent campaign for a different House seat on Long Island was not exactly a lie. Staying in this race all but guarantees a victory for the Dems in the race," he wrote. But after Mr. Johnson told his members to “vote their conscience,” nearly half of his conference chose to expel Mr. Santos, a remarkable rebuke from his colleagues.
“I do not believe that the Long Island crew is acting in bad faith, just exceedingly bad judgement,” said the Florida Republican representative Matt Gaetz. "George Santos has built his persona, his personal and political life, on a foundation of lies," said Ethics Committee chairman Michael Guest, a Republican from Mississippi. “Expel me and set the precedent so we can see who the judge, jury and executioners in Congress are,” he wrote on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. Other wild card candidates included Elaine Phillips, the Nassau County comptroller; Kellen Curry, an Air Force veteran and former banker; and Jack Martins, a well-known state senator who has run for the seat before.

The water is constantly being tested between March and September, though it's definitely worth checking ahead of visiting that levels remain safe before swimming. Situated at the crossroads of the Appalachian Mountains, it's a stunning area popular with hikers, bikers and horse riding. Nearby Fontana Village Resort is a small mountain town located in the Nantahala National Forest providing cabins, camping, restaurants, and an outdoor swimming pool. It's a great place to base yourself before exploring this stunning part of North Carolina. While there aren't any by the lake area itself, you'll find several near Fontana Village Resort, plus of course the nearby forests. Though smaller than Douglas Lake, Cherokee Reservoir still offers 400 miles of shoreline and is viewed by many as the most beautiful lake in Tennessee thanks to its clear, blue water. Just a little further north and within easy reach of Douglas Lake is Cherokee Reservoir, also known as Cherokee Lake.

There are several park areas including Stumpy Creek Park and Rock Springs Nature Preserve where you can enjoy walking trails, hiking and biking, plus it's a great place to explore if you love nature and wildlife. After exploring the lake by boat, why not take to the surrounding hills and follow the Mountain Island Park Trail? Taking you around Catawba River as well as the lake, this 1.6-mile hike is great for all abilities and gives you the chance to see the Mountain Island Lake Dam close up where you might even spot some local wildlife including herons, turtles and deer.
For those looking for a quiet spot, you can head to Dreher Island State Park, where you can swim or relax on a sandy beach, rent kayaks or fish. The two main areas of the park are Paddy's Creek, where you'll find a sandy beach perfect for swimming and a pavilion offering great views; and Catawba River which is perfect for fishing, boating and picnicking. If you're looking for something more adventurous, one of the best hiking trails in Lake Wateree State Park is Desportes Island Nature Trail. Here you can enjoy walking through beautiful forests and enjoy stunning lake views. Within easy reach of Charlotte just over an hour away, Badin Lake is surrounded by beautiful forests in a stunning area of natural beauty. Get lost in nature overnight, or simply enjoy a day spent by the water, there are plenty of opportunities for a great day out here.
